About SignScribe
SignScribe is a free, private, browser-based tool for creating a signature — by drawing, typing, or uploading — with nothing stored and no account required.
Why we built this
Most online signature tools either require an account, watermark your download, or quietly upload and store what you type or draw. SignScribe does none of that: everything runs client-side in your browser, your signature is never transmitted to a server, and there's nothing to sign up for.

The problem we set out to fix
Before building SignScribe, we went looking for a simple tool to generate a signature image and kept running into the same three annoyances: a forced account signup just to download a PNG, a watermark stamped across the middle of an otherwise clean signature, or a vague privacy policy that left us wondering whether our handwriting was being logged somewhere on a server. None of those felt necessary for something as small as "turn my name into an image." So we built the tool we actually wanted to use.
How SignScribe actually works, technically
Every part of the signing process happens inside your own browser tab using standard web technology — the HTML5 Canvas API for freehand drawing, web fonts rendered client-side for the typed styles, and the browser's own image-processing APIs for background removal on uploads. When you click "download," the file is generated and saved directly from your browser's memory to your device. At no point does your signature data travel to a server, because there's no server-side step in the process at all. This isn't a policy promise we're asking you to trust blindly — it's a direct consequence of how the tool is built, and you can confirm it yourself by opening your browser's network inspector while using any of the three tools.
Why we chose "no account" as a hard rule
Account systems exist for good reasons in a lot of products — syncing data across devices, remembering preferences, enabling team features. None of those reasons apply to a one-off task like generating a signature. Requiring an account for something this simple mostly serves the business collecting emails, not the person trying to sign a lease by 5pm. We decided early on that SignScribe would stay usable in one visit, with zero setup, and we've kept that rule through every update since.
What "free" means here
SignScribe has no premium tier, no download limit, and no feature locked behind a paywall. All three tools — draw, type, and upload — are fully available to every visitor, with no watermark added to any exported file. We don't currently run ads on the site either; if that changes in the future, it will never involve inserting anything into the signature images themselves.

Our editorial approach
Beyond the three tools, SignScribe publishes plain-language guides on topics like signature design and the legal status of e-signatures in different countries. We aim to explain the actual law — citing specific regulations like the ESIGN Act and eIDAS — rather than vague reassurances, and we're upfront in every guide that we're not a law firm, so anything involving a high-stakes contract deserves a real lawyer's review, not just a blog post.
A quick comparison against typical e-signature apps
| SignScribe | Typical account-based e-signature app | |
|---|---|---|
| Account required | No | Usually yes |
| Signature stored on a server | No, never leaves your browser | Often, to enable syncing and re-use |
| Watermark on free downloads | No | Common on free tiers |
| Best suited for | One-off signature images for forms, PDFs, contracts | Multi-party contract workflows needing audit trails |
That last row matters: SignScribe isn't trying to replace full contract-workflow platforms that route a document to five signers and track every open and click. For that specific job, a dedicated e-signature platform is the right tool. SignScribe is built for the far more common case — you, personally, need a clean image of your signature, right now, without setting anything up.
How we handle updates and bug reports
SignScribe is actively maintained. When something breaks — a font failing to load, a canvas rendering oddly on a particular phone, an export coming out at the wrong size — we treat it as a priority fix rather than a "someday" item, precisely because the whole premise of the tool is that it should just work in one visit. If you hit a snag, the fastest way to reach us is the contact page; screenshots and the browser/device you were using help us track down the issue quickly.
